Any colour you like, so long as it’s green – that’s SEAT’s unequivocal message at the International Eco Friendly Vehicle and Sustainable Mobility Show in Madrid.

We’re using the green-themed event to unveil the third-generation Ibiza Ecomotive, which boasts a new 1.2-litre TDI common-rail DPF engine and an array of economy-minded technologies.

These major engineering improvements help this left-hand drive supermini achieve exceptional CO2 emissions of just 89g/km – a joint best-in-class level that makes this Ibiza one of the cleanest conventionally engined cars on the planet.

This model is also the first Ibiza to use SEAT’s stop/start and energy-recovery systems, which help it achieve up to 81.3 miles per gallon.

The arrival of the new Ibiza Ecomotive confirms SEAT’s leadership in the field of green car development, joining our existing Ecomotive range, which includes the Leon (99g/km), Altea and Altea XL (119g/km) and Alhambra (159g/km).

Also on display in Madrid is the SEAT IBE Concept, which made itsglobal debut earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show and the Leon Twin Drive Ecomotive, a plug-in hybrid model that has a conventional combustion engine and an electric motor.

The Twin Drive’s lithium-ion battery is charged at the mains, giving it a 50km range in full electric mode.

Longer trips require additional support from the combustion engine. Mass production of this model is scheduled for 2014 but, by the beginning of 2011, as many as ten cars will be being tested on the roads of Madrid, Barcelona and Seville.

SEAT’s deep-rooted commitment to reducing the environmental impact of its vehicles could not be clearer. In its home market, the Spanish company tops the best-seller list of models that produce less than 120g/km of CO2, with the Ibiza being the undisputed segment leader. In fact models with emissions of less than 120g/km account for 60 per cent of SEAT’s domestic sales.

The new Ibiza ST was a big hit with journalists who were taken to Spain for the car’s international launch last week.

“On the face of it, the SEAT Ibiza ST is a small estate in the same mould as the Peugeot 207 SW or the Škoda Fabia Estate. But there's more to it than that,” says Honest John.

“It's the only estate – of any size – with a version that won't cost you a penny in road tax. The 1.2-litre TDI with 75PS uses stop/start technology to come in at just 94g/km CO2… It'll also return an incredibly impressive 78.5mpg on the combined cycle.”

“Inside it actually offers more luggage space than the larger Leon... Couple this with relatively low depreciation and insurance groups and the SEAT Ibiza ST makes sense as a cost-effective small family car.”

“Price, practicality, costs and looks will be top priority on most buyers' lists,” says Mark Nichol from Car Enthusiast. “With that in mind, the Ibiza ST makes a compelling case for itself.

“All the engines are frugal and punchy, to a greater or lesser extent, but primarily, the ST is a spacious and comfortable little car. The range of movement of the seat and wheel is wide, the controls are light and direct and, fundamentally, the boot is well shaped and loading is easy. It's also cheap to run, whatever engine you choose.

“It’s worth noting that the 1.2-litre TDI diesel ST Ecomotive is, for now, SEAT's cleanest car, with only 94g/km of CO2 and 78.5mpg. As a topical comparison, the Toyota Prius manages 'only' 72.4mpg.”

Reviews at Autocar were also impressed by the latest addition to the SEAT range: “The Ibiza is a worthy rival to the 207 SW and Fabia estate, so it should certainly be on your shopping list if you’re after a more spacious supermini.

“Unusually in a small car, the ST uses electro-hydraulic power steering which is natural-feeling, accurate and informative. There's a welcome degree of throttle interactivity in the handling balance, combined with a surprisingly supple ride.”


“If you’re in the market for a compact, spacious family car but find the thought of running around in a small MPV too much to bear then you’d do well to look at the new SEAT Ibiza ST”, says What Car?, which gives the Ibiza ST four stars out of five.

“It’s a stylish and impressively comfortable wagon that’ll double as a family load-lugger. Its boot is a spacious 430-litre with the rear seats in place, and the rest of the car is smart enough to get you noticed for all the right reasons.

“SEAT has now got its hands on the latest Volkswagen Group engines, which include the sweet 1.2-litre TSI petrol turbocharged engine and the super-frugal 1.6 TDI diesel.

"Both generate an identical 105PS and, thanks to turbocharging, both are spookily similar in character. The TSI petrol engine is actually the diamond in the range, pulling strongly from low revs and proving happy to spin smoothly right up to the red line.”

Luke Madden at Auto Express says the ST “is a logical and competent addition to the Ibiza family, giving style, a little extra space and an adequate drive.”

“[It’s] load area is well thought out… the tailgate opens wide and the low-set bumper lip makes it easy to load. Minimal wheelarch intrusion means the boot is a very usable size.

"Plus, neat touches include elastic straps and netting to stop things from rolling around, hooks to hang bags from and a small tray beneath the parcel shelf to keep items hidden.”

A significant number of spectators are expected to watch the UEFA Europe League Final live on TV when Spain’s Atlético de Madrid plays the British team of Fulham FC today. For SEAT this marks the culmination point of a highly successful season in association with European club football. The exclusive partnership of the Spanish car manufacturer and the UEFA Europa League has been proven a tremendous success. SEAT has been present at every match and on average over 26 million live match viewers per matchday in Europe have seen the SEAT branding around the pitch this season. With an average of 31 minutes of brand exposure during Group matches and even more than 70 minutes during Knock-out matches the media exposure across Europe was above our expectations.

”We are young, design-oriented and sporty, hence the UEFA Europa League is the perfect match in terms of presenting the dynamic character of our brand to a big crowd”, says SEAT chairman James Muir. Currently, SEAT is undertaking great efforts to strengthen the brand image in Europe and the sponsorship with the UEFA Europa League forms an integral part of it. “We are delighted with our partnership with the UEFA Europa League and are looking forward to the next season”, says Muir. SEAT’s engagement with the UEFA Europa League is to be continued in the two upcoming seasons running until 2012.

BMW M3 GTS Announced
All clear given for market launch of the BMW M3 GTS

The history of BMW M3 motor sport has been enriched by a further fascinating chapter as the BMW M3 GTS celebrates its debut on the racetrack and on the road. In terms of performance and safety, the most powerful version of the high-performance BMW M3 Coupe featuring a 331 kW/450 bhp engine offers the ideal preconditions for use at club sport events, whilst at the same time being officially road-legal. The BMW M3 GTS is produced at the BMW M GmbH manufacturing facility. In addition to a larger and more powerful V8 engine, exclusive tuning of the 7-speed M Dual Clutch Transmission with Drivelogic and modified suspension technology, the car, which is designed for club sport use, has also been specifically optimised with regard to aerodynamics and lightweight construction.
The supreme sporting potential of the BMW M3 GTS is underlined, inter alia, by a power-to-weight ratio that has been lowered to 3.4 kg per hp. Featuring a transmission and suspension configuration which has been optimised for the racetrack, the BMW M3 GTS accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 4.4 seconds. The car reaches the 1000 metre mark from a standstill in just 22.5 seconds. Top speed is 305 km/h.

“The BMW M3 is an icon and internationally synonymous with the highest level of dynamics,” explains Dr. Kay Segler, CEO of the BMW M GmbH. “Our aim was to develop a model variant that would prove its outstanding potential both on the road and at club sport racing events. The BMW M3 GTS is pure M feeling, embodying the brand values in a highly concentrated form.”


Tradition and future: The BMW M3 in motor sports.
For as long as two decades and four model generations, the BMW M3 has been the embodiment of spectacular motor sports successes. The number of victories and titles achieved in touring car sports has never been matched by any other model. With its precisely balanced overall concept, the latest BMW M3 also provides the ideal basis for outstanding performance on the racetrack. The BMW M3 GT2 is currently causing quite a stir at long-distance motor sports events. The BMW M3 is also playing a predominant role in preparing the brand’s comeback at the “German Touring Car Masters”. Parallel to this, BMW is currently setting new standards in the support of club motor sports. The many decades of experience in the development of racing cars and high-performance, road-going automobiles are reflected in the high performance potential of the BMW M3 GTS.
High-revving V8 engine technology at its best: Larger displacement, higher performance and higher torque.
The power required for high performance in motor sports is delivered by an
8-cylinder engine featuring a high-revving concept. With its unparalleled enormous pulling force, which is constantly available over a very wide engine speed range, the V8 engine developed exclusively for the BMW M3 by the BMW M GmbH features refined performance characteristics that are closely oriented towards the requirements of motor sports. A version of this power unit with further increased displacement, power output and maximum torque was exclusively conceived for the BMW M3 GTS.

The increase in displacement from 3,999 to 4,361 cc is achieved by a cylinder stroke that has been extended from 75,2 to 82 mm. In the enlarged combustion chamber, a maximum power output of 331 kW/450 bhp (BMW M3: 309 kW/420 bhp) is delivered at 8,300 rpm. Maximum torque has been increased by 40 Nm to 440 Nm and is available at an engine speed of 3,750 rpm.

Characteristic constructional features derived from motor sports, which include, inter alia, the crankcase designed as a bedplate construction and made of a special aluminium-silicon alloy, individual throttles, knock sensors featuring ionic-current technology and a dynamically optimised wet-sump oil supply have been adopted from the original power unit. The lightweight sports exhaust system developed for the BMW M3 GTS with model-specific primary catalytic converters and titanium rear silencers ensure optimum exhaust flow.

Transmission of power is effected by means of the M Dual Clutch Drivelogic gearbox developed for the BMW M3. This 7-speed transmission operates according to a principle also developed for motor sports and permits gear shifting without interruption of traction for extremely dynamic acceleration. Its gear shift characteristics have been exclusively tuned to the modified engine featured by the BMW M3 GTS.

High-performance suspension with adjustable racetrack set-up.
The car’s suspension technology also derived from motor racing is based on the front and rear axle construction featured by the BMW M3 Coupe. Contrary to that, the BMW M3 GTS features a rigid rear-axle support as well as a coilover suspension, the dampers of which are independently variable in the traction and compression travel. Moreover, camber on the front and rear axles and vehicle height are variable for motor racing purposes. The car is lowered by 16 mm at the front and 12 mm at the rear.

The high-performance brake system featured on the BMW M3 GTS has been designed as a fixed-calliper construction and comprises six pistons on each of the front wheels and four pistons on each rear wheel. Compared to the BMW M3, the brake discs are 18 mm larger in diameter at the front and 30 mm larger in diameter at the rear. Furthermore, steel-armoured hoses are used.

Specific tuning of the stability control function DSC (Dynamic Stability Control), including ABS and the M Dynamic Mode (MDM), make allowances for the increased dynamic potential of the BMW M3 GTS. Optimum transfer not only of acceleration torque but also of the brake torque is also guaranteed by mixed tyres on matt black, 19-inch M light alloy wheels featuring a Y-spoke design.


Aerodynamics: Optimised components with variable adjustment.
In order to optimise air stream and for on-demand adaptation of downforce characteristics, the BMW M3 GTS is fitted with motor racing-oriented front apron and rear wing elements. They offer the possibility to adapt the car’s aerodynamic characteristics according to the racetrack profile and other basic club motor sport requirements. The air duct elements in the front apron are also variable, as is the position of the rear wing. The tail assembly is based on the corresponding component featured by the BMW 320si in the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC).

The BMW M3 GTS can be recognised from the outside by its bright orange single-coloured body. Additional model-specific features are the matt black exterior components such as the BMW kidney grille, roof trims and alloy wheels as well as the side gill elements made of dark anodised chrome. In addition to the standard CFRP roof on the BMW M3 and titanium rear silencers, an exceptionally light construction of the centre console and door panels, the use of polycarbonate side windows at the rear and a polycarbonate rear window, dispensing with seats in the rear compartment and acoustic insulation configured specifically for the vehicle all serve to guarantee weight optimisation. The unloaded weight of the BMW M3 GTS according to DIN is 1,530 kg including roll bar and M Dual Clutch Drivelogic transmission (BMW M3: 1,600 kg). Automatic climate control and audio system supplied as standard comfort features in the BMW M3 can be fitted if the customer desires.

The interior of the BMW M3 GTS reflects a predominant focus on optimum performance and the highest level of safety on the racetrack. The range of equipment includes thoroughbred racing bucket sets, carbon interior trims and an Alcantara® M steering wheel. Door and sidewall linings in the rear compartment are also made of Alcantara®. The BMW M3 GTS is equipped as standard with a roll bar fitted behind the B-pillars. Furthermore, the car body offers fastening points for six-point safety seat belts and an optional extension for the roll cage. The car is fitted with three-point automatic seatbelts for road use. Additionally supplied six-point safety seat belts for driver and front seat passenger and a fire extinguisher complete the range of equipment.

The new SEAT Alhambra is the perfect companion for an active and sporty lifestyle. The Spanish brand‘s all-new Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) offers far more than plenty of space for family, business and hobbies. Just like every SEAT, sporting character and driving fun stand side by side with a high degree of usability. Thanks to its surprisingly dynamic handling, powerful drivelines ranging from 140 to 200 hp and the latest hi-tech equipment, every kilometre driven in the Alhambra is a joy – especially as they don’t come at the expense of outstanding efficiency. With average fuel consumption of only 5.5 litres, the Alhambra sets a benchmark in its segment.

The Format
The Alhambra is the perfect size for a European MPV – its increased dimensions deliver an outstanding level of interior space. Thanks to its great visibility and nimble handling, however, it is incredibly manoeuvrable in city traffic. To put it into figures – with a length of 4.85metres, the new Alhambra is 22 centimetres longer than its predecessor, while it is wider by nine centimetres. There is even plenty of room for adults to sit comfortably in the third row, while the large sliding doors (with optional electric operation) enable easy entry. Luggage space is more than generous – with seating for five, the base volume is 885 litres, which grows to a maximum of 2,297 litres if only the front two seats are in use.

The seating concept
Central to development was the intelligent and extremely versatile seating concept - the new Alhambra comes with seating for five, six or seven. If more storage room is called for, the second and third-row seats must no longer be removed; instead, they can be sunk easily into the vehicle floor using the “Easy-Fold” system. The middle row seats can also be arranged longitudinally, with integrated child seats available as an option. The seating position of both the driver and front seat passenger combines the best visibility with an exceptionally sporty feel and perfect ergonomics.

The Design
The new Alhambra clearly conveys its dynamic character through its design. The broad, taut proportions, the clear lines and the distinctive wheel arches give it a powerful presence and a level of sporting appeal that is unusual in the MPV sector. With its arrow-shaped bonnet, hallmark grille and highly distinctive front skirt continuing the Arrow Design, the new Alhambra clearly displays its SEAT DNA. The sleek side profile shows great technical precision, with the sliding doors perfectly integrated. The muscular spoiler on the rear edge of the roof, the low-reaching rear hatch and the expansive light clusters dominate the rear end.

The engines
Beneath its attractive skin, the Alhambra is new in every detail and equipped with state-of-the-art technology. This starts with the engine line-up, where all TSI and TDI power units are equipped with direct fuel injection and turbocharging. The TSI units deliver 110 kW/150 hp and 147 kW/200 hp, while the two TDI engines offer 103 kW/140 hp and 125 kW/170 hp. Further efficiency technologies fitted as standard include the stop/start system and brake energy regeneration – the recovery of kinetic energy. These guarantee refined pulling power alongside exceptional efficiency. With an average fuel consumption of only 5.5 litres and CO2 emissions of just 143 g/km, the SEAT Alhambra 2.0 TDI with 103 kW/140 hp sets a clear benchmark in this vehicle class. The Alhambra TDI is also equipped with an SCR catalytic converter (Selective Catalytic Reduction), making even the diesel model one of the world’s cleanest MPVs.

The Technologies
Just like the TSI and TDI engines, the optional DSG dual-clutch transmission delivers the perfect combination of sporting character, comfort and efficiency. But the range of state-of-the-art and innovative technologies offered as optional equipment on the new Alhambra is considerably broader. It includes bi-xenon headlamps with adaptive control and full beam assistant. A sensor detects oncoming vehicles and automatically dips the beam. Also new, is the park/steer assistant, which autonomously manoeuvres the Alhambra into tight parking spaces - even perpendicular to the direction of travel. The rear view camera delivers an image of the world behind the vehicle. The panorama sliding roof has an opening that is 300 percent larger than a conventional sunroof, while three-zone Climatronic ensures optimum temperature in all seating areas. Electric motors simplify the operation of the sliding doors and rear hatch.

Production standard safety equipment is already well above the industry average. It encompasses seven airbags, including a driver-side knee airbag, and electric child locks on the rear doors. Also standard are ABS and ESP, including electronic braking assistant, trailer stabilisation and tyre pressure monitoring display. The Alhambra is offered in Reference and Style versions, where even the base equipment levels are extensive. The SEAT Alhambra will be produced in Palmela, Portugal, with market launch scheduled late this summer.

Land Rover Announces 275 New Jobs At Solihull Plant

Land Rover, the leading manufacturer of prestigious SUV vehicles in the UK, is to create 275 new jobs at the company's manufacturing plant in Solihull, West Midlands.

The additional positions are required to support an increase in demand following the seventh consecutive month of improved sales. March sales in the UK recorded the highest figures for any month in the company's 62 year history.

Phil Popham, Land Rover managing director commented: "These additional positions are excellent news for the manufacturing industry in the Midlands. It comes as a result of a phenomenal response received from customers and the media to the award winning 2010 model year range, giving Land Rover an incredible start to the year."

More than 5,000 people work at the Solihull plant. The extra 275 agency positions are required to start immediately to boost the build rate in light of the increased demand for the new vehicle 2010 model year range.

In March 2010, Land Rover sales in the UK were up 67% on the same month last year selling over 11,300 vehicles. As well as the iconic Defender model, the Solihull plant is responsible for manufacturing the company's acclaimed Discovery 4 which saw sales increase by 58% together with the Range Rover Sport and Range Rover models both also up by 70% and 36% respectively compared to the same period last year.

Solihull is a flexible manufacturing operation with a commitment to excellent levels of quality, and these new positions will support the delivery of more prestigious SUVs to our customers around the world.

Applications for these vacancies are being handled by Manpower plc.

SEAT makes green motoring add up

As the successful UK scrappage scheme fades into memory SEAT is launching an innovative new retail offer that lets buyers who missed out save not once, but twice.

The exciting Eco-nomics initiative delivers savings of up to £2,000 off the RRP of selected SEAT Ecomotive models – the Spanish maker’s cleanest, greenest cars.

And by trading out of an older, more polluting model into a clean, green SEAT Ecomotive buyers can then look forward to further significant savings as they spend less on their day-to-day running costs.

For instance, the pioneering scheme suggests buyers of a new generation Leon Ecomotive SE – which features SEAT’s new 1.6-litre TDI powerplant with common rail fuelling, Start-Stop technology and Energy Recovery system – can, including the RRP discount, save a total of more than £4,300 over a typical three-year/45,000 mile ownership period.

The savings, calculated against average SEAT Leon range economy statistics, are boosted by the new Leon Ecomotive’s exemption from Road Tax.  By virtue of its exceptionally low CO₂ figure – just 99 g/km – the latest Ecomotive is free from Vehicle Excise Duty.

And that remarkable CO₂ figure is all the more impressive when you consider that the original Ibiza Ecomotive, launched here just three years ago, had the very same CO₂ rating despite its lighter weight and significantly smaller size.

So, Leon Ecomotive SE buyers keen to take advantage of SEAT’s clever new Eco-nomics offering will see the list price of the car slashed from £18,045 RRP to just £16,045 RRP.  Meanwhile Ibiza Ecomotive buyers opting for the super-green supermini in either SC or 5dr form could qualify for a customer saving of £1,250 off the cars’ RRP, which currently starts at £12,790.  The Eco-nomics discount therefore makes the revised RRP for the Ibiza SC Ecomotive just £11,540.

The revolutionary scheme, which applies to retail customers only at participating SEAT dealerships, relates to orders made between 1 April and 30 June, with cars registered and handed over by 31 August 2010.

Explaining the thinking behind the new Eco-nomics deal SEAT UK Head of Operations, Richard Harrison, said: ‘With the ending of the government’s scrappage scheme the industry has seen numerous ‘swappage’-style deals pop up.

‘However, we wanted to take the original ethos of the scrappage scheme and add a SEAT twist by making our latest, class-leading, green technology models even more accessible for everyone, not just owners of ten-year-old cars.

Already great value, with the added Eco-nomics discounts, our Ecomotive models now appeal even more to the head as well as the young at heart.’

Jaguar celebrates 75th Anniversary with impressive entry at 2010 Mille Miglia

Jaguar is continuing the celebration of its 75th anniversary with a strong entry at the 2010 Mille Miglia revival event. The company is represented by a total of 27 vehicles from around the world, including an impressive ‘works team’ of classic XK120, C-type and D-type models supported by Jaguar Cars and the Jaguar Heritage Trust.

Jaguar’s strong representation at the 2010 Mille Miglia builds on a long connection with the race. Back in 1950, the company fielded a four-strong team of XK120s, and a young Stirling Moss took the wheel of a works car the following year.

“The Mille Miglia is one of the world's premier driving events, and one where Jaguar has always felt very much at home,” said Mike O’Driscoll, Managing Director of Jaguar Cars, who will be piloting one of the famous C-type racers in this year’s competition.

“Our association stretches back to the 1950s, when XK120 and XK140s were a regular sight and C-types and even a D-type also competed. This year I am proud to see another very strong contingent of classic Jaguars.” he added.

The 2010 Mille Miglia takes place over a 1000-mile course starting from Brescia in northern Italy, mirroring the classic event which became synonymous with legendary displays of driving skill and bravery between 1927 and 1957.

The current retrospective format offers an ideal opportunity to showcase some of Jaguar’s most famous vehicles where they really belong: competing with other classic sports cars on the open road. This year’s full representation also provides a fitting way to celebrate an important milestone for the marque. Furthermore, Jaguar is proud to be a joint sponsor of the Mille Miglia 2010 with heritage vehicle displays along the route.

“2010 marks the 75th anniversary of the Jaguar name, and 75 years of looking forward, designing and building cars that represent the very best of technical innovation, design leadership and sporting success,” explained O’Driscoll.

I can think of nowhere better to continue our 75 year celebrations than at the legendary Mille Miglia, and I look forward to experiencing the unrivalled glamour, passion and motoring heritage that the event is certain to offer all competitors and spectators again this year.”


Famous Jaguars Competing in the 2010 Event
Among the six vehicles entered as the Jaguar Cars ‘works team’ are three particularly noteworthy historic cars from the Jaguar Heritage collection:

1950 JAGUAR XK120 OPEN TWO-SEATER (Registration NUB 120)
NUB 120 was by far the most successful of the competition XK120s which, more than any other model, was the car that established Jaguar’s motor sport credentials. The vehicle was privately owned and campaigned by Ian Appleyard, with his wife Patricia (Sir William Lyons’ daughter) acting as navigator. After narrowly coming second in the first event he entered, the 1950 Tulip Rally in Holland, Appleyard then strung together an impressive run of victories including the Alpine Rally in 1950 and 1951, the 1951 RAC Rally, and the 1951 Tulip Rally. Despite failing to win the Alpine Rally outright in 1952, the third consecutive run without incurring a single penalty point earned the first ever Gold Cup for the car!

1953 JAGUAR C-TYPE (Registration NDU 289)
With its handsome wind-cheating aluminium body, the C-type brought Jaguar its first victory in the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1951. Two years later, the three factory cars finished first, second and fourth, with the winning vehicle driven by Rolt and Hamilton being the first ever to average over 100mph. One of 43 C-types sold to private owners, NDU 289 was a production car built in 1953. It competed in the 1953 Mille Miglia driven by its owner, the Italian driver Tadini, but retired during the race.

1956 JAGUAR D-TYPE 'LONG NOSE' (Registration 393 RW)
This vehicle was the penultimate D-type produced by Jaguar, built in March 1956 for the works racing team. That year, it won the Reims 12-hour race, driven by Duncan Hamilton and Ivor Bueb, before encountering technical problems during the 24-hour race at Le Mans, where it ultimately finished sixth (behind the winners Flockhart and Sanderson in another D-type entered by Ecurie Ecosse). Although Jaguar withdrew from racing later that year, the vehicle lived on in America with the Cunningham/Momo team, and finished third in the 12-hour race at Sebring in 1957. This vehicle remains one of the most original D-types in preservation, and still has the 1956 Le Mans windscreen, passenger seat and door, and even sports the original trade plate registration 393 RW.
