Scrappage scheme extended

Lord Mandelson announces details of a £100 million boost to popular car buying scheme.

The UK's Scrappage Incentive Scheme will be boosted by a further £100 million, the Goverment has said. It's also been announced that cars eligible for the scheme can now be six months younger than before, with the age qualification changed to include cars registered on or before 29 Feb2000 (V registration). The scheme will come to an end in February 2010or when the funding runs out, which ever is sooner.

Lord Mandelson announced the new details in a speech this afternoon. The motoring sector has been strongly affected by the recession, but the scrappage scheme has delivered a boost to manufacturers and the supply chain.

Citroen C4

Citroen C4

Our spies have snapped these shots of Citroen's latest family hatchback, the refreshed C4.
Citroen's quirky C4 is in for an update! These spy shots show a heavily clad test-mule keen to hide any details of the cars design.

Although the photos don't reveal much, Citroen's product boss, Vincent Besson has told media that the new car will be lighter and more efficient than the current model.

Talking at the Frankfurt Motor Show, Besson also revealed that the car will be powered by three cylinder engines at launch and, possibly, petrol-electric hybrid drivetrains in the future.

Citroen also laid out their strategy for hybrid and electric vehicles, claiming that the technology will only be available on high-end models of the C4 because it's not economically viable in small city-cars.

The updated C4 is due to be launched towards the end of 2010 with prices starting at around £14,000.

2CV

2CV leads Citroen into new era

Stylish city car inspired by tin snail, with hybrid set-up to make production.
Vive la difference! Crowds flocked to Citroen's stand at the Frankfurt Motor Show to see one of its most exciting concepts ever - the Revolte. And while the French firm says the 2CV-inspired model which carried the badge of its premium DS range on its bonnet won't make it to production, its styling cues and innovative hybrid technology will.

Boasting plenty of curves, particularly around the rear, and a retro rollback roof, there's much of the 2CV in the Revolte, but Citroen says the study is all about looking forward. “The point of this car is to get people to talk about Citroen as a luxury firm, explained head of concepts, Carlo Bonzanigo.

Scrap scheme extension?

As the money allocated to the UK Scrappage Scheme begins to run out, the industry is calling for the initiative to be extended.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) met with Business Secretary Lord Mandelson to ask for a further £200million in funding. More than two-thirds of the original £300million has been claimed – and the SMMT says that will run out in early November at the current rate.

But after the scheme’s success in reversing 15 months of falling sales, makers are worried that a sudden end to it will create more uncertainty. SMMT boss Paul Everitt described the meeting as “very constructive” and hoped a decision would be made within three weeks.

“This would allow Scrappage to continue until next February, when it was predicted to end,” he added. “We still need to convince the Treasury that it has been a success for the wider economy, as well as car makers.”

Which? Car Survery 2009 Winners

The Honda Accord has achieved a score of 99% - highest scores the Which? survey has ever seen. This puts the Accord at the top of the league for reliability in the UK. It's a great result and the good news doesn't stop there…

There were high scores in the survey for the Civic Hybrid too - achieving first place for reliability in the hybrid sector and and seventh place overall in the survey.

The new Jazz scored 98% for reliability, achieving second place overall and first place in the supermini class.

Happy Honda Owners

Citroen 2V

The 2CV is back and here are the best pictures yet! Images of Citroen's new concept car, called the Revolte, have been leaked onto the internet ahead of its worldwide debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Official information on the newcomer is thin on the ground at the moment, but it's thought that the Revolte previews a forthcoming premium small car from Citroen aimed at the likes of the Fiat 500 and the MINI.

The curvy shape takes much inspiration from the original 2CV – just check out the C-shape that wraps around the rear doors and the distinctive tailgate, details which echo those of the famous model. However, the front grille, lights and bold wheel-at-each-corner stance are very modern cues that seek to bring the 2CV into the new millennium.

The doors open in a suicide manner and reveal a futuristic interior with a digital dashboard display and a bizarre steering wheel. Under the skin, it is expected that the Revolte will share its platform with the new DS3 premium small car – and feature a hybrid powertrain too.

We'll learn more about the new model when it's revealed at Frankfurt next week.

Citroen C-Crosser: 11,018 miles

Citroen C-Crosser
Life’s a beach as our SUV heads on a family holiday!

At last! We’ve finally put the all-wheel-drive system on our Citroen C-Crosser to the test. I borrowed the keys to RV58 GBE for my summer break, and parking up on the beach at Brean Sands in north Somerset gavethe perfect excuse to engage four-wheel drive!

Auto Express publishing director James Burnay usually looks after the Citroen, but when I needed a car for a two-week holiday, the SUV’s promise of space and economy made it my number one pick. So, apart from its trick transmission, did it live up to my expectations? The answer is a resounding yes! Anyone with children will appreciate how much extra kit you have to carry when you go away – and from the moment I began packing the C-Crosser, it was already winning me over.

Best Supermini-MPV

Citroen C3 Picasso

Citroen C3 Picasso

Why it won... Citroen's Picasso line-up has gone from strength to strength and the super-sized C3 model wrestled its way to the top of the class when it arrived earlier this year. That's quite an achievement, as competition doesn't come much tougher than in this sector of the market.

The Honda Jazz and Nissan Note are both excellent cars in their own right, so the newcomer really did have its work cut out to triumph. With the Picasso badge adorning its nose, the people carrier was always going to look different. The artist co-founded the Cubist movement, so the Citroen's boxy and distinctive styling should come as no surprise.

Citroen 2CV is back

Citroen has released this image of a brand new concept ahead of Frankfurt - a modern take on the 2CV!

XF 3.0 litre V6 Diesel Luxury

It's official Citroen will reveal an all-new concept at next week's Frankfurt Motor Show and, judging by this first official picture the 2CV is back!

With its raked bonnet and snail-like profile it bears a striking resemblance to the iconic 2CV, which was produced by Citroen for 42 years and discontinued in 1990.

However, while the 2CV was designed to be cheap and cheerful, the newcomer will feature lots of hi-tech kit as standard, including sat-nav and connectivity for the latest handheld gadgets. It remains to be seen if the concept will feature some of the quirky designs of the original car such as a centrally mounted gear lever. But we'll have to wait until its Frankfurt unveil next week for any official details on the striking new concept.
