Honda Insight Becomes First Hybrid Vehicle to Rank as Best-Selling Vehicle* in Japan


TOKYO, Japan, May 11, 2009 - Honda Motor Co., Ltd. announced that Insight ranked as the industry's best-selling car among new vehicle registrations* in Japan for the month of April 2009, with sales of 10,481 units (source: Japan Automobile Dealers Association). It is the first time in history for a hybrid model to be the industry's best selling vehicle in Japan for any monthly sales period.

Jazz (Fit) was the industry’s best-selling car among new vehicle registrations in Japan for calendar year 2008 and the fiscal year ended March 31, 2009. Jazz (Fit) was also the industry’s best-selling car for the month of March 2009, for the fourth consecutive month since December 2008, until it was displaced by Insight to become the industry’s second best-selling car in April 2009,with sales of 9,443 units. It is the first time Honda has occupied the industry’s top two best-selling car positions.

Since its introduction on February 6, 2009, the all-new Insight has been very well received by a wide range of customers due to its excellent environmental performance, easy-to-use packaging, light and comfortable driving and affordable pricing.

Jaguar´s new naturally aspirated 5.0 Litre V8 powers the XK and XK Portfolio models. It produces 385PS – an impressive 29 percent increase versus the previous-generation XK V8 engine – and delivers acceleration from 0-60mph in just 5.2 seconds.

The high performance XKR is powered by the new supercharged 5.0 Litre V8. This remarkable engine delivers a muscular 510PS – a 23 percent increase over its predecessor – and can take XKR from 0-60mph in a breathtaking 4.6 seconds. Yet our engineers have been able to deliver these dramatic increases in power, and corresponding increases in torque, whilst at the same time improving Fuel Economy and reducing CO2 emissions.

Ibiza Ecomotive Economy Record

The ultra-frugal Ibiza Ecomotive has set a new economy record by covering a staggering 970 miles (1,562km) on a single tank of fuel.

At the wheel was Gerhard Plattner, an internationally renowned economy-driving champion, who helped the Ecomotive achieve an amazing average fuel consumption of 97.4 mpg.

Plattner set out from SEAT’s headquarters in Martorell, near Barcelona, on Monday 27 April, after both the bonnet and fuel cap had been sealed. He then drove through Perpignan, Avignon, Lyon, Mulhouse, Freiburg and on to Frankfurt, where he was due to finish after covering 835 miles. But having already set a new world record for fuel economy for a car in its category, he discovered there was still fuel in the tank of his Ibiza 5dr Ecomotive – and decided to keep going.

He eventually reached Göttingen, where the chairman of the International Police Motor Corporation, who supervised and ratified the record attempt, removed the fuel cap and filled the car with exactly the same quantity as when the it had left Martorell – 45.53 litres.

Plattner said: “Setting this record has been incredible. Without a doubt, it has been the most spectacular fuel-saving challenge this year so far. The Ibiza Ecomotive performed perfectly.”

Scrappage Scheme

In his Budget on 22 April 2009, the Chancellor announced a UK Car “Scrappage Scheme”.

May 1st 2009 Honda (UK) can confirm that Barretts will participate in the “Scrappage Scheme”.
Under the terms announced, any customer who trades in a car or a van that was first registered on or before 31 August 1999 will receive a £2000 discount off the price of a new Honda car. This will be joint funded by Honda (UK) and the Government and be effective for registrations from 18 May 2009.
